What Are NHS Prescription Charges?
As of 2025, the standard NHS prescription charge in England is £9.90 per item. This applies to most medicines prescribed under the NHS. However, not everyone is required to pay this fee.
If you live in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, NHS prescriptions are free for everyone. But in England, eligibility for free prescriptions depends on several factors such as age, income, medical conditions, and the benefits you receive.
Who Qualifies for Free NHS Prescriptions?
You may be entitled to free prescriptions if you fall into one of the following categories:
1. Age-Based Exemptions
Under 16 years old
Aged 16–18 and in full-time education
Aged 60 or over
2. Income-Based Exemptions
You may qualify for free NHS prescriptions if you or your partner receive any of the following:
Income Support
Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit)
Universal Credit (subject to specific criteria)
NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate (available for those who qualify for Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit and meet income thresholds)
If you’re on a low income but don’t receive the above benefits, you may still be eligible for help under the NHS Low Income Scheme.
3. Medical Exemptions
If you have certain long-term medical conditions, you may qualify for an NHS Medical Exemption Certificate, which entitles you to free prescriptions. Qualifying conditions include (but are not limited to):
Diabetes (except diet-controlled)
Epilepsy requiring continuous therapy
Cancer and the effects of cancer or cancer treatment
Hypothyroidism requiring replacement therapy
Permanent fistula (e.g. colostomy)

If you’re pregnant or have given birth in the last 12 months, you may be entitled to free prescriptions and NHS dental care with a valid Maternity Exemption Certificate.
5. War Pension Exemption
If you’re entitled to a war pension and the prescription is related to your accepted disability, you may also be eligible for free prescriptions.
How to Apply for Prescription Exemptions
Applications for exemption certificates can be made through your GP or midwife (for maternity exemption), or through the NHS Business Services Authority online.
